Caminante son tus huellas,
El camino nada más;
caminante no hay camino
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace camino
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino
sino estelas sobre el mar.
¿Para que llamar caminos
A los surcos del azar...?
Todo el que camina anda,
Como Jesús sobre el mar.
El camino nada más;

BUEN CAMINO!!!

“Pedal, pedal, … and do not look back” said my friend
Vero. That surely will be my mantra
during this amazing journey that lies ahead.
Butterflies starts flying in my stomach when I look ahead to the journey, specially since I am not a professional cyclist but a typical part time cyclist that only cycles on a Sunday when there is no rain, no heavy winds and the list goes. Have to tell you friends though, wind is beast that you hardly can tame down when cycling. Despite the long and demanding journey from Cadiz to Santiago across the Spain, mind is ready to take the challenge, which I guess by all means is the most important.
My name is Maria and I will make the journey with my father, Salvador. In the days to come, together we will go through this intense, demanding ride with full of emotions and at times with joy and adventure. Our next expedition will be the second cross-country ride that we are hoping to undertake following our successful first attempt in which we took the road from Castellón to Santiago de Compostela covering 1,100 km in 15 days.
The Cierzo, the strong dry winds that flows through the imperial canal of Aragón was the first of my memories as we rode through the strong winds which was nearly impossible to go past during the day while it subsided as the night arrived. At such times, my mind invaded with thoughts questioning my decision to take on this challenge, merely making me think of my stupidity. The beginning in our province was also challenging due to the gradient that was even higher than the Cruz de Hierro or the O'Cebreiro passes. Have to say though, the climbing the latter were also epic. The crossing of harbour Ares on the second day of the journey wasn’t that easy either. It was a very cold day and my hands and ears were frozen to the level I felt numb. In spite of all these hard challenging days and moments, the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day was amazing.Reaching Zaragoza was a boost in confidence; reaching the Aragonese capital after 110 miles was a milestone and was also the longest distance covered on a single day.Completing the both Cruz de Hierro and the O'Cebreiro passes on the same day was another memorable moment of the journey. As mentioned before, despite the challenging route across these passes, the difficulty level was nothing compared to the inclining route found in Castellón.
Via de la Plata, goes back a thousands of years to the time of when Neolithic men took these roads to fulfil their needs of communication and migration in search of livelihood. That follows a time when these men came in to Iberia civilizations: Phoenica and Tartessos. Based on archaeological findings these cities in the Iberian Peninsula believed to have had trading paths along these routes. Eventually, with the development during the Roman era, the exemplary multipath structures were formed. Finally, but not the least, Arabs conquered these lands during there prime and rebuilt this route as vital route of communications to link the entire West. In time other uses and reasons added to the significance of this route. The spiritual importance of the route is to visit the tomb of the Apostle; reputed burial-place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. However, to this day people visit this historical location for holidays, meeting people around the worldeven for mutual reasons such as to finding oneself and to feel natural. The other significance around the area is the Sierra Morena Mountain range that lies from east to west across the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The 450 km mountain range itself has its own history and stories that may excite you.
In few days, we set off to our next adventurous ride to Satiago de Compostela and with that in mind we started this blog to share our experience and advise to future pilgrims. We will take all the effort to update the blog daily and also to translate the same in to English to be useful to many international pilgrims who wish to venture in to our fields. We hope this will be informative as well as be useful!!!
